Imphal, April 21 2019:
The Congress party has accused the ruling BJP of violating the Model Code of Conduct as well as violating the voting rights of the people, particularly the people of Andro Kendra, during the election for Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency which was held on April 18 .
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhawan today, MLA K Meghachandra alleged that in almost all the Polling Stations of Andro Kendra, BJP workers resorted to proxy voting and rigging during the election.
None of the Congress Agents were allowed to sit in the Polling Stations and the voting was also performed unethically, he claimed.
Speaking about the incident at 7/40 Nongpok Keithelmanbi Polling Station, Meghachandra said that all the claims made by BJP MLA K Saratkumar are false and baseless and explained that after he was appointed as in-charge of Andro Kendra by the Congress high command, he had gone to the area as the Congress party election observer.
Informing that he, along with Congress candidate O Nabakishore and party MLAs, went on an inspection trip to the area, Meghachandra said that there were forced collection of votes during the trip.
It was learned that BJP workers and some womenfolk were working hand in hand and preventing Congress Agents from going inside the Polling Station, he alleged, adding that he along with the Congress candidate and Agents went to complain to the Presiding Officer but women BJP workers prevented them from doing so.
The MLA further alleged that the Police Head Constable posted at the Polling Station did not take up any action as well.
Meghachandra then asked why the women workers were preventing the agents from going inside the Polling Station and why the police posted at the area failed to do anything and whether all of these were allowed as per the MCC.
He then explained that he reprimanded the in-charge police official for failing to perform his duties and to complain to the ECI for his suspension.
The incident was not in personal interest, the MLA added.
Stating that the polling at Andro Kendra was not a vote in the real sense, Meghachandra said that the BJP violated the rights of the people of Andro Kendra.
The BJP also filed the complaint against the two Congress MLAs to prevent a repoll at the Polling Station where it (BJP) resorted to unethical practices, he added.
Meghachandra continued that if the BJP misuses its power as a ruling party, the society will never develop.
Now is not the era of dictatorship.
Police should also perform their duties diligently and make sure that the MCC is enforced and it is the right of the people of Andro as well as an in-charge of the Kendra to demand so, he added.
