Imphal, December 19 2021:
MLA Nahakpam Indrajit of Kshetrigao constituency has called for concrete steps to mitigate the gradual degradation of our customs and tradition.
He expressed this sentiment at the 'Workshop Cum Presentation on Nitya Raas' conducted at Madan Mohanji Mandir in Bamonkampu Mayai Leikai today.
The workshop was organised by Academy of Indigenous Music (AIM) on the theme of 'Revisit of Manipur Raas' .
MLA N Indrajit urged for the preservation of our customs and tradition stating that the people in the community have the responsibility to preserve the beautiful culture, manners, way of life, traditional garb and so on.
He further added that traditional garments not only convey which community one belongs to, but often, these garments show one's religion or the social events one is attending.

Speaking on the occasion, Irengbam Shyamchand, secretary AIM, remarked that for the first time Nitya Raas, which is one of the 5 Raas, will not only be produced by the Academy, but it will be performed in Manipuri.
Expressing dismay over the dwindling popularity of the artform, he stated that their aim is to introduce the Raas to young folks.
The workshop which was planned for a period of 45 days was extended to around 70 days due to the pandemic, he added and commented on the stark difference between the past and present on how the Raas used to be performed in villages frequently but in this day and age, it is only performed in the palace.
He expressed hope for a renewed interest among young people in this artform through this workshop.
S Thanil, former Director JNMDA urged for collective effort to preserve this artform.
It may be noted that Chairman Ranganiketan and Ajit Das attended the event as guests of honour while the students of the Academy gave stunning performances of Nitya Raas and Pung Cholom.
