Imphal, August 19 2014:
The Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) General Headquarters in its executive meeting held today, has resolved to support the bandh, called by All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) against Manipur University Authority and the State Government for not implementing the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act, 2012 .
The KSO said that it has already instructed its district branches to utilise every available resources at their disposal for successful enforcement and culmination of the bandh.
The students' organisation, in a press release alleged that the unethical conduct of the Manipur University Authority to forgo the Central reservation norms is discriminatory and anti-tribal.
In 2008, the leaders of tribal students' organisations, which include ATSUM, KSO, ANSAM and MUTSU had courted arrest over the same reservation policy.
The tribal students are still resolute in their stand against any injustice that infringes their rights.
It further added, every citizen must understand that in the new Gazette of India dated June 20, 2012 an amendment has already been promulgated in the Central Educational Institutions Act, 2006.As per the amendment, reservation of 31pc for Scheduled Tribe (ST) is to be followed in admission of students in Central Universities located in the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and the Sixth Scheduled areas of Assam.
Therefore, the recent issue brought up by some individuals raising hue and cry about it, is unsolicited.
KSO alleged, if the Manipur University authority and the State Government allowed themselves to be swayed by some unscrupulous individuals in the University by neglecting the voices of MUTSU and ATSUM, it will be regretful.
What the MUTSU and ATSUM demand is their rights granted by an Act of India Government.
Trying to put away these rights, is not going to serve the unity and integrity they clamour for, but instead leads to disintegration and chaos.
The KSO urged the State Government and Manipur University authority to tread carefully over this delicate issue as they will never compromise their rights in any situation.
The State Government must settle the matter before it gets out of hand, KSO concluded.
