A combined team of Imphal East district police and 16 Assam Rifles personnel today arrested two individuals suspected to be arm-smugglers along with a 9 mm pistol.
The individuals were arrested by the team led by Inspector Kh Henery Singh, OC-CDO Imphal East and Inspector Kh Pathou Meitei OC, Heingang PS under the instruction of Roni Mayengbam, Additional SP (Ops) Imphal East as a part of the continuous CI operations carried out by Imphal East district police.
The arrested persons have been identified as Haolal Chongloi (50) of Khomunnon village, Ukhrul district and Thanggougin Chongloi (24) of Yangnoi village in Kangpokpi district.
The team seized one 9 mm pistol, one 9 mm pistol magazine, one motorcycle (Bajaj Pulsar) and two mobile phones from the possession of the suspected arm-smugglers.
It is said that both the arrested persons have confessed to be illegal arms smugglers and had sold a number of arms and ammunition to willing buyers many times earlier.
According to police, the individuals stated that they were on their way to sell a pistol (seized today) to one Lenminthang Hanshing at the cost of Rs 50,000 via one unknown woman who would have waited for them at Sekta Lamkhai.
The police have also learnt from Haolal Chongloi that the pistol was allegedly bought from one Ayo Tangkhul from Sirarakhong, Ukhrul district at the cost of Rs 40,000 after Lenminthang made the contact.
The arrested persons and items seized have been handed over to Heingang PS for taking up further necessary legal action, the source continued.
