Imphal, February 15 2011:
Unidentified miscreants but suspected to be students, who are protesting over the protracted stand off between the Government and teachers, set on fire two higher secondary schools in Imphal area today.
In the first incident, around 15 suspected students reportedly descended on the campus of Model Higher Secondary located at Sagolband Khamnam Bazar at around 10.15 am today and made a bonfire of all the benches, desks, blackboards, etc after taking them out from the classrooms.
In the second incident, which occured at around noon, an unused hall of CC Higher Secondary School located at Sanjenthong was found set on fire.
Timely arrival of the fire service personnel managed to extinguish the fire in both the cases before any major damage could be caused.
Police have recovered one scooter and one bicycle from the sites of the incidents, which are suspected to have been left behind by the arsonists.
It may be noted that with conduct of normal classes in schools remaining affected for long following the stand off between the agitating teachers who are demanding implementation of Central 6th Pay in toto and the Government, agitated students threw their text books at the gate of the Raj Bhawan and at the official of the Chief Minister on February 12 .
