Imphal, July 09 2012:
Expressing grievances over the payment of only two-month's unemployment allowance to handicapped persons, Handicap Development Foundation has cast slur against the Social Welfare department for failing to give them stipends of one year.
Addressing media persons today at the Manipur Press Club, secretary of Handicap Development Foundation, Sapam Jasobanta said that 2700 disabled persons of the State have their names registered with the Employment Exchange office.
All the registered persons were availed unemployment allowance by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment since 2008-09 .
Accordingly, disabled students with Class X and XII were awarded Rs 100 each per month while graduate students were given Rs 150 each per month as unemployment allowance.
When the disabled students went to collect their allowance for one year today at Imphal West DC office, they were given stipends of two months only which according to them is not even sufficient for their travelling expenses, Jasobanta said.
Stating that the funds are sanctioned by the Centre, Jasobanta asked where has the remaining amount been kept by the Social Welfare department.
He added that it amounts to the violation of the rights of the disabled persons.
