Imphal, August 08 2022:
The Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization (Thoubal Ima) has strongly condemned Chief Minister N Biren Singh's statement regarding the legalisation of IMFL liquor in the State during the recently concluded Monsoon Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
A statement issued by Moirangthem (ongbi) Sanatombi, secretary general, Thoubal Ima, has called the Chief Minister's statement one-sided adding that legalising alcohol has the potential to unfold immeasurable damage to the health of the people and community as a whole.
Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization stated that successive Governments should not test the people's patience by bringing up the matter of legalisation of alcohol time and time again.
The statement urged the State administration to remember that in 1975 when the abuse of alcohol and other illicit substances grew substantially among men in Manipur leading to violence on women and children, it was the womenfolk who stepped forward to launch the "Nisha Bandhi" movement.
The statement also highlighted the health issues brought about by alcohol consumption such as liver cirrhosis and societal issues, namely, young women losing their husbands due to alcoholism.
Thoubal District United Women's Development Organization asserted that there is no such thing as "good liquor" as every type of alcohol can impact the health and well-being of a family and society by extension.
