Imphal, September 07 2016:
Anguished by an order which dismissed 20 contract workers from service today, contract employees of Central Agriculture University (CAU) raised an uproar apart from sealing the University's academic block.
After locking the academic block, they staged a protest demonstration in front of the same block.
CAU Contract Employees' Association secretary L Premchand said that they could not accept the abrupt dismissal of the 20 contract employees who have been working there for prolonged periods.
The remaining contract employees would seal all the blocks of the University apart from launching cease work strike from today and the agitation would go on until all the dismissed employees are reinstated, Premchand said.
On the other hand, CAU Dean JM Laishram maintained that the additional staff were dismissed as per a directive of the University's Vice Chancellor.
There were 117 contract employees in CAU by March 2015.Out of them 12 were regularised.
Although 105 contract employees were still remaining, the VC's directive asserted that the total number of employees should not exceed 84 and hence the additional staff were dismissed.
Informing that efforts are on to open a girls' hostel, a boys' hostel and farmers' hostel, JM Laishram assured that the dismissed staff would be given preference as and when staff required for the new hostels are recruited.
