Dance drama 'Kuranga Nayani' premieres

Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla today inaugurated the premiere show of Kuranga Nayani, a dance-drama produced by Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound.
During the event, Najma Heptulla also fecilitated Devjani Chaliha, scriptwriter, Kuranga Nayani and Th Chaotombi Singh, director, Kuranga Nayani.
Welcoming the spectators, L Opendra Sharma, Director of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal said that ever since the inception of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal in 1954, the production wing has produced more than 38 dance dramas including Kabui Kayoiba and Sakuntala.
Acknowledging that the artistes of the unit are one of the best dancers in the country, he also said that World Music Day and Kang Chingba will be celebrated on June 21 .
The programmes of the academy have also been launched on live webcast at the oficial website www.sangeetnatak.gov.in, he added.
Governor Najma Heptulla said, "It was indeed exciting to witness the agony of Karna on the drama 'Karna' on December 8 last year.
It is interesting to see that the roles of Karna remained the same even if I have earlier read different versions of the Mahabharata" .
She further said, "I find the Indian footprints from Afghanistan, Bali, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.
I feel proud that Indian ethos and culture could reach to far-off places.
Manipur is not a big State in terms of size but is indeed very big in terms of cultural heritage, art, culture and music" .
President of the releasing ceremony, Hijam Tombi, Vice-Chairman, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal said, "The academy has made significant contribution in the promotion of traditional dance and music since the last 63 years.
There is an urgent need to develop a lecture cum demostration and documentation to know the real taste of asthetics of our dance dramas" .
Lead cast of Kuranga Nayani include G Chandan Devi as Kuranga Nayani, O Jiten Singh as Bhagyachandra Maharaj and Y Inaocha Singh as Gourashyam Maharaj.
