Imphal, April 05 2018:
Following the State Government's failure to issue an order to fence the playground of DM College of Arts, the DM College of Arts Union, 2017-18 has imposed an indefinite total shutdown in all the Departments under Arts section apart from banning the construction works of PG Academic blocks which are underway.
Irate students from various Departments of the Arts section also burnt down the college properties, including desks and benches as part of their protest today.
Speaking to media persons on the spot, the union's general secretary Arambam Vikas conveyed that the union's decision to impose an indefinite shutdown and ban the construction works as well as launch the protest are a result of the Government's failure to fulfil the union's demand.
He asserted that leaving the playground of the DM College of Arts unfenced is a great risk to the students as many outsiders can easily come inside the campus and carry out many unwanted things, including theft.
The playground is merely present as a grazing field for catties and cannot be used even for organising extracurricular activities for the students, he added.
Although respective games and sports secretaries have been putting in efforts from time to time to protect the playground, their efforts have failed.
Informing that the inconveniences and disturbances caused by the; unfenced playground were conveyed to the Chief Minister in person during "Meeyamgi Numit" and through a written format, the general secretary pointed out that the grievances were also relayed to the Director of Education (U) on April 3.He further stated that the union had also served a deadline to the Government to issue an order for fencing the playground by noon, today.
The union has also been organising many peaceful sit-in-protests since April 3.
