Biren bats for organic farming in State

Chief Minister N Biren Singh has said that people should strive to ensure the success of organic farming in the State.
He made the statement at the inauguration function of the Administrative Block of Central Agricultural University (CAU), at Lamphelpat today.
Citing the demerits and harmful effects of chemical fertilizers, Biren said that prolonged use of fertilizers and chemicals for crop cultivation would ultimately lead to various diseases and health hazard.
He said that Manipur was once called "Sanaleipak Manipur" because of the peculiar and exceptional taste of its fruits and crops produced by its fertile soil.
The Chief Minister further said that the people should utilize the resources available in the State to its fullest extent.
Stating that the Government would give more emphasis to the agricultural sector of the State, N Biren said, "As we have plenty of ground water and good rainy season in the State, the farmers should opt for double cropping instead of sticking to a single crop in a year.
"We should encourage the farmers to increase the cultivation of black rice because of its demand outside the State", he added.
He further said that rainwater harvesting facilities would be established in the hill areas of the State so that water can be stored for drinking and irrigation purposes.
Expressing concern at the alarming corruption level in the State, he opined that the society has been spoiled by corruption and collective effort is needed to root out corruption.
N Biren assured that the dreams and wishes of the educated youth would not be shattered because of corruption.
Chairman, Pollution Control Board and Khadi and Village Industries, L Radhakishore Singh, Parliamentary Secretary ( MAHUD) N Indrajit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, CAU, Professor M Premjit Singh, Director of Research, CAU, Professor CA Srinivasamurthy and officials and students of CAU attended the function.
