Political activists of Manipur People�s Party (MPP) have started indefinite relay hunger strike in front of party office from today demanding revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur and punishment of security personnel involved in the killing of Thangjam Manorama and Saichang village pastor Jamkholet Khongsai.
On the first day today, 14 party workers including office bearers drawn from various Assembly Constituencies took part in the agitation.
They are party general secretaries Ch Shamjai Singh of Keirao A/C, AK Sanaton of Thongju A/C and O Jugindro Singh of Wangoi A/C; treasurer M Jadumani Singh of Keishamthong A/C, joint secretaries L Borajao Meitei of Oinam A/C, K Ranabir Singh of Konthoujam A/C, M Nilachandra Singh of Singjamei A/C, working committee members Ch Birachandra Singh of Kshetrigao A/C, K Krishnachandra Singh of Bishnupur A/C, M Binokumar of Yaiskul A/C and Md Ayub Khan of Lilong A/C, party�s Wangkhem Kendra secretary Sh Modhumangol Sharma and vice presidents Ch Babudhon Singh and K Sanakhomba Singh.
The second phase of the relay hunger strike would be tomorrow at the same venue.
Meanwhile, the party has exerted pressure on the ruling SPF Government for convening an emergency session of the State Assembly to discuss the prevailing situation in the State in the wake of mass protest against prolong imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from Manipur in view of its blatant violation by the security personnel.
MPP also asserted that instance of extra-judicial killing of Manorama and that of Pastor Jamkholet Khongsai would be the last as long as the repressive Act is in force.
On the other hand, party workers of BJP Imphal East District staged a sit-in-protest demonstration demanding revocation of AFSPA from Manipur at New Checkon Bazar from 11 am to 3 pm today.
Senior party leader and ex-Minister Dr H Borbabu, State unit party general secretary Y Mangi, district president T Ibohal, Yuva morcha president Th Ajit Singh, vice president C Libel and general secretary Th Santosh Singh were among the odd 200 parties workers who participated in the demonstration.
