Imphal, July 25 2017:
Central Agricultural University (CAU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Moirangthem Premjit has said that it is critical to improve the economic condition of the farmers by increasing their income generating potential which in turn will rid the State's dependency on others for food and resources .
He made the statement at the demonstration and hands on training and distribution of domestic mini rice mill and flour mill organised by All India Coordinating Research Project on Post Harvesting Engineering and Technology, AICRP on PHET, Directorate of Research CAU, at it conference hall today .
Professor Moirangthem Premjit, Professor JM Laishram (Dean CAU) , Professor CA Srinivasamurthy ( Directorate of Research, CAU), Professor Y Jekendra (Head of Department, Agricultural Engineering, COA, CAU) attended the event as the presidium members .
Moirangthem Premjit stressed on the importance of improving the income generating potential of the farmers and added that CAU has been helping and assisting the farmers in this endeavour for quite some time .
He stated that CAU is working tirelessly with the State Government to improve the agricultural productivity of the State .
Premjit pointed out that CAU has been taking up many initiatives like distributing fruit saplings to the people with the aim of increasing the productivity of the State as well as improving the health of the people, providing chickens, pigs and other livestock to the people of various hill districts as well as the valley etc .
He elaborated that a region cannot develop if the farmers are left behind and added that without proper channel for generating income, it would be useless even if the farmers toil hard in the fields .
By using upto date and advanced farming techniques and tools, the farmers can increase their agricultural output greatly, he added .
As a part of the event, domestic mini rice mills were distributed to 11 farmers and two farmers were given domestic flour mills.
The rice mill and the flour mill will greatly benefit farmers from remote areas of the State and CAU is giving the mini rice mill at a subsidised rate of Rs 25,000 only although it costs around Rs 35,000 in the market .
The mini rice mill can clean about 150 Kgs of rice per hour and one of the distinct advantage of the mini rice mill is that the husk and the residue are expelled together, unlike traditional mills, which in turn makes it an extremely potent source of food for chickens and other livestock.
