Imphal, July 12 2018:
An emergency meeting of Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) was held at the association's office, chaired by its president Professor I Tomba Singh today to assess the unfolding scenario in connection with the agitation for removal of the present VC, Professor Adya Prasad Pandey.
A press release issued by the president of MUTA stated that the members discussed the attempts being made to cause fear and a sense of uneasiness among the students by circulating 'rumours' of indefinite closure of the university's hostels.
The alleged attempts to create ethnic based divisions among the students for generating friction in the democratic and peaceful agitation for removal of the VC were also noted by the members.
It further mentioned that the members expressed anguish over the authoritarian, anti-democratic and anti-university nature manifested in these incidents.
The meeting condemned the attempts to cause fear and uneasiness among the students of Manipur University as well as the students/residents of the hostels.
It was also resolved during the meeting that MUTA would stand tooth and nail against any attempts to close the hostel indefinitely with the ulterior motive to derail the peaceful and democratic movement to restore justice, institutional and academic propriety in the university.
The meeting also resolved to reiterate the demand for a holistic solution to the crisis in the university by removing Professor Adya Prasad Pandey from the post of VC and to apprise the office of the Governor about the latest developments in Manipur University.
