CJM remands 13 to 9 days police custoday

Thirteen persons including five women were formally arrested by police and remanded to 9 days police custody by the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West today for allegedly burning down several houses at Kakwa Huidrom Leikai on February 28.Notably, all the accused persons were earlier arrested on charge of wrongfully confining and assaulting a woman.
They had completed their police custody period and were produced before the Court today with a prayer for judicial remand.
The accused persons are identified as Naorem Sanajaoba (34), Naorem Babuloo (31), Naorem Ramesh (31), Naorem Tarukton, Naorem Sanatomba (65), Naorem Bipin (31), Naorem Bijen, Naorem Abem (35), Naorem Tarubi (37), Naorem Victoria (29), Naorem Elizabeth (29), Konthoujam Lendar (19), all from Kakwa Naorem Leikai and Elangbam Naocha of Langthabal Mantrikhong.
During the hearing for the assault case, the defense counsel filed remand objection along with a prayer for releasing them on bail.
The Investigating Officer of the case through Assistant Public Prosecutor submitted that the accused persons have allegedly admitted that they were part of a mob which assaulted a woman and burned down several houses.
The IO claimed that a video footage clearly shows their roles in the mob.
The accused along with others burned down and vandalized the houses of Longjam Pikto, Longjam Achou, Longjam Jibanlata, Keisham Rajan and a godown of Mobile furniture on February 28.The IO further submitted that the accused persons along with some other persons evading police had committed mob justice by assaulting and wrongfully confining an aged woman and obstructing the police from performing their duty.
The Court, after hearing the submissions, fixed May 10 for order and remanded the accused persons to police custody in the meantime.
During the hearing, a team of Singjamei Police, on the other hand, filed an application for making formal arrest of the accused persons in connection with six different cases registered at Singjamei Police Station for burning down houses and other properties on February 28 at Kakwa Huidrom Leikai.
The Court after perusing the materials on record allowed the prayer to cause arrest of the accused persons.
The Court also allowed the prayer for a 9-day police custody and remanded the accused persons to police custody remand till May 15 .
