Police retrieve three grenades

Imphal, July 30 2011:
Three hand grenades hurled or gifted by unidentified persons in connection with monetary demands at different places of Imphal which failed to go off have been retrieved by explosive experts of Manipur and later set off in safety.
In the first instance, one hand grenade was placed at the Thangmeiband Chingakham Lampak residence of contractor Laishram Birendrajit yesterday afternoon.
The grenade was found on the bonnet of a car kept at the courtyard of Birendrajit at about 2.30 pm.
Police retrieved the grenade and set off safely at Langol the same afternoon.
Meanwhile, local people staged a protest demonstration at Chingakham Lampak today against the practice of threatening civilians with grenades and firearms.
Another hand grenade was also hurled at the residence of Agriculture Officer L Ibomcha at Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai at about 9.30 pm yesterday.
Just 30 minutes later, unidentified persons lobbed another hand grenade at the residence of another Agriculture Officer Chanam Jugindro at Uripok Achom Leikai.
The second and third hand grenades were set off safely this afternoon at Langol.
