Imphal, November 29 2014 :
Heartily welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the State, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Manipur State unit has drawn the attention of the PM to remove the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 from the State.
A statement issued by the president of NCP Manipur, MLA L Ibomcha said that the AFSPA, the only draconian law of British era now extended in J&K and NE region, has alienated the local people from national mainstream.
The statement also pointed out that adequate potable water supply and laying of water distribution pipes for supply of water in area within 0 mile of Imphal city could not be achieved till date since the attainment of Statehood on Jan 21, 1971 .
Areas within Imphal city like Keishamthong, Sagolband, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa, Uripok, Patsoi etc are flooded in the event of heavy rainfall for 2/3 hours due to lack of proper drainage and sanitary system.
It also pointed out the lack of planning in urban areas which led to congestion, chaos and environmental pollution.
The NCP statement further said that non-maintenance of road resulted in the loss of many lives.
Urging the PM to stabilise the situation in Manipur, the NCP also expressed hope that Manipur would become a peaceful, harmonious and developed State in the next five years under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
