Imphal, March 29 2018:
The Manipur People's Party (MPP) has demanded Chief Minister N Biren to tender an apology to the people of Manipur for his statement that the entire North East region has been a part of India since the time of Lord Krishna.
Speaking to media persons at their Mapan Kangjeibung office today, MPP president Oinam Jugindro remarked that the Chief Minister's statement was quite absurd and unwarranted.
The assertion that the North East region has been a part of India since the time of Krishna on the pretext that Krishna married Rukmini, daughter of Vimakki, the king of Edu Misi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh is baseless.
The Chief Minister's statement was fabricated to win accolades and certain benefits from the Prime Minister.
MPP, on behalf of the 39 ethnic groups of Manipur, condemn the same fabricated statement in the strongest term, Jugindro said.
Advising Chief Minister N Biren to study the history of Manipur, Jugindro pointed out that Manipur became of part of India only in 1949 after the Merger Agreement was signed on September 21 of the same year.
Before this, Manipur existed as a sovereign country for 3423 years.
Although the written history says that Nongda Lairen Pakhangba (33 AD to 154 AD) was the first king of Manipur, there were many kings before him like Ningthou Sentreng, Kuptreng etc and this period can be assumed as proto-history, Jugindro said.
On the first sitting of the post-British independent Manipur Parliament (Manipur State Assembly) held on October 18, 1948, Maharaja Bodhachandra stated about the territory of Manipur, "Read her political history from 24 AD.
She had her dominion over a wide area extending as far as the south portion of China in the North, the gold mines in Sibasagar valley, the River Chindwin in the East and South and Chandrapur (Cachar) in the West", quoted the MPP president.
It is a matter of great concern that the Chief Minister could not uphold his own identity while attempting to please his political boss.
The National Anthem of India penned by Rabindranath Tagore does not mention any of the North Eastern States and it is clear testimony of the fact that the region including Manipur was not a part of India, said the MPP president.
Alleging that Chief Minister N Biren is a man who does not know his responsibility, Jugindro asserted that N Biren should tender an apology to the people of Manipur for the statement he made at Madhavpur mela, Gujarat otherwise MPP would be compelled to launch different modes of agitation.
He further asserted that using the photograph of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay in State Government offices and on the anniversaries of the State's freedom fighters is a direct challenge to the identity of Manipur and the same should be rectified at the earliest.
