Imphal, December 27 2018:
Altogether 90 Kgs of contraband ganja reportedly seized by Imphal West Narcotics Cell from an individual turned into saw dust when the contraband was produced before the Court.
In connection with seizure of around 90 Kgs of ganja from one Asem Ajit alias Ibomcha (45) s/o Kullachandra of Pishumthong Oinam Leikai by Imphal West Narcotics Cell ASI N Khoiba on February 2, 2004, a special trial case was going on at the Court of the Special Judge, ND&PS (FTC) W Tonen Meitei.
The Court passed a judgement regarding the case on December 17 this year.
While the accused appeared before the Court with his defence counsel, the State was represented by a Special Public Prosecutor when the case was heard.
The Special Public Prosecutor submitted before the Court that IO K Ganglaona Kabui gave oral evidence that he can identify one gunny bag and two plastic bags which contain the seized ganja.
He had marked the bags 1, 2, and 3 and also put his signatures.
But when the bags were produced before the Court on December 15, neither the markings nor the IO's signatures were found.
And when the bags were opened before the Court, the contents were found to be saw dust rather than ganja.
Subsequently, the Court acquitted the accused saying that the prosecution has totally failed to prove the actual seizure of 90 Kgs of contraband ganja from the unauthorised possession of the accused.
The Court further asked the DGP to take up appropriate action against those dealing with the case.
