Imphal, December 24 2016:
A team of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) today called on Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and sought the Central Government's immediate intervention into the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the State on account of the UNC's indefinite blockade.
The AMWJU team included president Wangkhemcha Shamjai, vice-president Asem Bhakta, general secretary Jit Ningomba and executive member Sunzu Bachaspatimayum.
After listening to the team, Rajnath Singh stated he had already talked about the blockade and its adverse impacts with Chief Minister O Ibobi and Union Minister of State (Home) Kiren Rijiju was sent to Imphal to make a direct assessment of the situation.
Claiming that the Central Government has been talking with the UNC, the Union Home Minister assured that all possible measures would be taken up to get the blockade lifted at the earliest.
The AMWJU team also urged the Union Home Minister to help the State Government check communal conflicts and safeguard the integrity of Manipur.
The team has also sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveyed a press release issued by AMWJU.
On the other hand, the team met some UNC leaders at Delhi and the latter reportedly regretted that the economic blockade caused untold misery to all the people of Manipur.
UNC would like to lift the blockade at the earliest but the State Government did not respond to the UNC's proposal to hold a meeting and resolve the issue, the UNC leaders reportedly told the AMWJU team.
It further informed that the team would also call on Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Venkaiah Naidu and DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra.
