Woman shot dead, 24 hrs Moreh bandh begins

Locals of Moreh have imposed a 24 hour bandh in the border town with effect from 8 pm today against the alleged indiscriminate firing near Moreh Gate Number 2 in which a woman vendor was killed.
The bandh decision was taken during a meeting held today evening at the office of Meitei Council Moreh.
According to reports, two suspected underground cadres coming on a motorbike fired indiscriminately near Moreh Gate Number 2 causing injury to a woman vendor.
She has been identified as A Shanti (47) of Moreh Gate Number 4 .
She was rushed to Moreh District Hospital for immediate treatment but declared brought dead by doctors at the hospital.
The two suspected underground cadres managed to flee the area after spraying the bullets.
Soon after the firing, a team of Moreh police and officers of Tengnoupal police station rushed to the spot and enquired the incident.
Angered by the unprovoked firing, locals of Moreh closed shops and business establishments in the border town.
A case has been lodged with the police station concerned in connection with the incident.
Strongly condemning the firing, Meitei Council Moreh asked the individuals/group concerned to clarify as to why the act was committed.
Mention may be made that tension has been running high in Moreh after many untoward incidents took place in the border town and its nearby areas recently.
Police were put on alert to prevent any kind of untoward incident and violence in the town.
