Water price hike hits Imphal as Govt supply scheme fails

Imphal, March 22 2015: Price of water sold by private suppliers has increased double fold now in Imphal as major water suppliers such as Porompat Water Supply Scheme, Koirengei Water Supply Scheme and other smaller Government water schemes have completely stopped supplying water to the public.

As water scarcity hits the State's capital Imphal due to arid conditions of major river water source, private players are reported to be making brisk business.

Many private water suppliers are now raking in the moolah as the public are compelled to buy potable water at an inflated price.

The demand for water has abruptly increased in the last few days which led to the private water sellers hiking the price double fold.

Now, one water tanker charges Rs 300 against the previous price of Rs 100, one Tata Magic water carrier takes Rs 1500 against earlier rate of Rs 300 and DI Tata water supplier sells water at Rs 1000-2000 per 2000 litre of water.

Government water supply schemes at Canchipur, Khongman, Okram Chuthek, Loklaobung and Akampat have also closed down as Imphal river and Iril river have almost shriveled.

However, two huge private water reservoirs at Lairenpat in Imphal east are now selling water and earning money round the clock because there is still water in some sections of the Iril river.
