One gets 10 years RI for raping minor

A man convicted for raping a minor has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment under POCSO Act.
Salam Imocha, Special Judge, Fast Track Special Court Number 1 today sentenced rape convict Irom Rakesh to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years under section 6 of POCSO Act for committing aggravated sexual assault on a minor girl in 2018 .
Irom Rakesh (25) of Lamboikhongnang Khong Mamang Leikai was produced before the Court for sentence hearing yesterday from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa.
During the sentence hearing, Special PP M Bishambor submitted that the victim of the case is a child of tender year and was just beginning her schooling.
Saying that the offence committed by the convict is a heinous crime, the Special PP prayed for awarding exemplary punishment to the convict.
On the other hand, the defence counsel of the convict submitted that the convict is a young person with no criminal antecedent and prayed for minimum punishment.
The Court, after hearing both the parties, sentenced the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment of 10 years under section 6 of POCSO Act.
The period which the convict had undergone during the police investigation and trial of the case would be set off the sentence announced today.
As such, the convict would be in judicial custody till August 5, 2031 .
The Court also ordered that Rs 1 lakh be given to the victim as compensation by the State Government from the Victim Compensation Scheme within 30 days.
The same Court had convicted Irom Rakesh under section 6 of POCSO Act on June 18 .
Notably, the convict allegedly abducted the father of the minor victim and physically assaulted and attempted to murder him at a foothill between Iroisemba and Lamdeng on May 21 night when the convict was out on bail in connection with the same case.
