Imphal, November 20 2019:
As the Citizenship Amendment Bill is expected to be tabled in the ongoing winter session of the Parliament, the Manipur Democratic Alliance (MDA) has urged the Centre to include provisions to safeguard Manipur in the Bill.
The Bill must not be introduced in the Parliament without any special clause or provision to protect indigenous people of Manipur, MDA said in a statement issued by its co-convenor K Khagendra Singh today.
MDA is submitting memoranda addressed to the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister through the Governor apprising them to include provisions to safeguard State and its indigenous people, it said.
It may be mentioned that MANPAC (Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill) in association with North East Forum for Indigenous People had launched protests imposing an 18 hour bandh in the State yesterday.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill seeks to amend The Citizenship Act, 1955 to make Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship of India.
To protest against any move to enact CAB, MANPAC under NEFIP has been launching a series of protest movement across the State.
Similar protests have also been launched in different parts of the North East region.
