Imphal, August 20:
Condemning legislators of both the ruling and opposition political parties for back-tracking from their declared commitment to remove Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 from Manipur, three students' bodies- AMSU, DESAM and MSF in a joint statement reiterated that time has come to teach the politicians a fitting lesson for betraying trust of the people of the State.
Taking into account the inaction and callous attitude of these politicians to the genuine outcry of the oppressed people, the student bodies aspired that the present lot of politicians need to be uprooted to enable a new breed that would keep interests of the public at the forefront before personal agenda to sprout.
The pledges of some Ministers and MLAs to resign if AFSPA was not removed from Manipur has today reflected the public baffling tactics pursued and advocated by the politicians since long back, observed the joint statement.
It also flayed such politicians irrespective of their allegiance to the national or the regional political parties for betraying the people and conniving to either please the Centre or jump into position of power when the opportunity arrives, said the statement while describing the public announcement by political Organizations and its leaders of endorsing the ongoing agitation as an eyewash and dramatical.
It may be recalled here some of the State politicians have earlier declared to resign from their respective posts if the Act was not removed but have kept quiet after its partial lifting.
Bodies condemn assault on housewife: Heingang Kontha Makha Leikai Model Club and Meira Paibi Lup while alleging that a team of State police commando roughed up a housewife identified as Sanousam (O) Ibemma Devi, has strongly condemned the assault and unruly behaviour of the police men.
