Court rejects bail plea of UNC leaders

District and Session Judge, Imphal East Golmei Gaiphulshillu has rejected the bail application of UNC president Gaidon Kamei and Shangkhel Stephen.
After hearing submissions of the petitioners' counsel M Mahendra, Additional PP of the State M Bisambhar and his assisting counsels, the bail was kept reserved by the Court yesterday.
While pleading for the release of the UNC leaders on bail, their counsel N Mahendra submitted that the petitioners have been falsely implicated in the case and they have nothing to do with the alleged offences listed in the FIR registered against them by Tadubi police station.
The counsel also added that offences under Section 124-A and 153-A, CrPC have been added by the Investigating Officer of the case without any basis.
Contending that there is not an iota of evidence against the petitioners and no material has been recovered from them which can implicate them, the counsel pleaded for release of his clients on bail.
Apart from citing two Supreme Court cases in support of his argument, Mahendra submitted two documents; letters inviting to tripartite meeting on current economic blockade from the Chief Secretary, addressed to president/ general secretary UNC and another letter sent by the Director (NE), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India addressed to the UNC president.
On the other hand, Additional PP M Bisambhar and his counsels submitted that the economic blockade was called by UNC of which the alleged accused are president and information secretary respectively.
The Court after hearing both the counsels and after perusing the bail objection report, case diary, bail application with the documents filed therewith and also after referring to the Supreme Court rulings, rejected the bail application.
