Imphal, January 17 2019:
In connection with the complete ban imposed on all types of construction and maintenance works on NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway), the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) has written to the DGP seeking immediate intervention.
The Land and Property Owners Association, NH-37/39 Jiribam-Imphal Section imposed complete ban on all types of construction and maintenance works on NH-37 until a concrete understanding is reached with the department concerned regarding payment of compensation of land and properties.
As a result, all types of construction and maintenance works have ceased since January 14.NH-37 which was lying in a pathetic condition for decades has seen marked improvement since NHIDCL took over from BRO.
Three contractors are currently engaged in short term improvement and routine maintenance works.
The three contractors also started filling up potholes and repairing dilapidated portions during the past one month.
Meanwhile, construction of Barak and Makru bridges has been going on in full swing so that the construction work can be completed within the stipulated period.
However, the complete ban imposed by the Land and Property Owners Association, NH 37/39 Jiribam-Imphal Section since January 14 has been causing huge losses to the three contractors.
Moreover, preparation of DPR for re-alignment and upgradation of NH-37 to the level of a four-lane highway has been suspended on account of the highway, informed a source.
The NHIDCL submitted a representation to the DGP today pointed out that the ban currently in force would delay the highway project inordinately as the working season in a year is very short in Manipur.
It also expressed grave concern that a group of people has been halting such a key project.
It then urged the DGP to take up necessary
action without undue delay.
