Imphal, August 16:
The Centre for Organization Research and Education (CORE) strongly condemns the denial of rights of freedom of expression and information to the public in Manipur banning the programmes of ISTV network which is the only Manipuri language network available providing local news and programmes in this area.
In a statement, CORE said that the order restricting the operation of the ISTV prevents citizen from receiving or disseminating information regarding the present difficult situation prevailing in the State due to the continuous agitation of the people.
The only news available is therefore through the two Government controlled channels, ie AIR and Doordarshan Imphal Kendra.
It added that these order is a direct violation of India's commitments under ICCPR Articles 10, 26, 27, Constitution of India Article 19.The statement observed that it is a matter of grave concern that such attacks on the freedom of the media, media infrastructures and mediapersons has become a common practice by the Government of India and the Government of Manipur and their agencies.
