Target of 85,000 kgs of fish set for Chakkouba

The State Fisheries Department is targeting to produce about 85,000 kilograms of fish for Ningol Chakkouba celebration this year.
The annual Fish Fair of the department will be held at Thangmeiband Thau Ground this year on the eve of Ningol Chakkouba (October 31), Fisheries Director David K Shimray informed.
Speaking to The Sangai Express today, Director David K Shimray said the Department of Fisheries has targeted production of about 85,000 kilograms of fish for the Ningol Chakkouba celebration this year.
The department organises a fish fair cum fish crop competition for Ningol Chakkouba annually.
This year, the fair will be held at Thangmeiband Thau Ground, David said.
Last year, the department produced over 82,000 kilograms of fish against a target of 80,000 kg.
The department sold over 17,000 kilograms of Pengba and Ngaton at the fish fair last year.
“It was disappointing.
Pengba and Ngaton are two important fishes of the State.
But the sale of these fishes at the fair was minimal”, David said.
The prices of fishes to be sold at the fair will be informed after a sitting with the DCs, consumer clubs, fishermen, DFOs and other officials, scheduled to be held on October 18.Last year’s fish prices set by the directorate are, Catla – Rs 200 (below 3 kg) to Rs 250 (3kg and above), Rohu – Rs 200 (below 1 kg) to Rs 250 (1 kg and above), Mrigal – Rs Rs 200 (below 1 kg) to Rs 250 (1kg and above), Common Carp – Rs 170 (below 1 kg) to Rs 230 (1kg and above), Silver Carp – Rs 150 (above 1kg) to Rs 180 (above 3 kg), Grass Carp – Rs 200 (below 3 kg), Ngaton – Rs 650 per kg, Pengba – Rs 650 per kg.
There are about 22,000 fish farmers in the State.
The department, under the National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, organises three-day to five-day training for these farmers periodically.
Selected progressive fish farmers are also sent to a 15-day exposer visit to other States, David stated.
The department also provides a grant of Rs 10,000 to Rs 14,000 to 756 selected fish farmers of the State.
The grant is provided phase-wise to these farmers especially for breeding fingerlings , he added.
