Najma donates one day's salary

Sharing solidarity with the people affected by flood, Governor Najma Heptulla has decided to postpone Eid-Ul-Fitr celebration.
She also announced that she along with the entire staff of Raj Bhavan will donate their one's day salary to the Governor Relief Fund for providing assistance to the people reeling under the flood.
She made the announcement before media persons at the Raj Bhavan this evening.
Saying that the Eid-Ul-Fitr celebration can be held some other day after the flood situation has improved, the Governor noted that the primary concern at this hour should be given to the grievances and suffering caused by the flood in the State.
She also asked all to extend possible help to the people affected by the flood while informing that she will also ask the Union Home Minister and the DoNER Minister to provide assistance and address all issues arising out of the flood.
The Chief Minister and the Health Minister of the State will be also be consulted in connection with the matter, she added.
She opined that it is a must to find a permanent solution to flash floods and minimize the impact of natural calamities in every possible way.
Soil erosion and siltation in major rivers resulting from deforestation, specially in catchment areas and lakes are some of the major causes of floods in the State, she pointed out adding that it is high time that dredging of lakes, canals, rivers and other water bodies besides improving drainage system in Imphal city and other parts of the State is initiated and expedited.
Hence, experts and authorities concerned will be consulted to discuss and seek suggestions in this regard and a letter will also be written to the Minister concerned to enhance the activities of preserving Loktak Lake and other lakes, she conveyed.
The Governor also appealed to all sections of the society to be aware of the growing impact of environmental degradation and asked all to protect and preserve nature so that the brunt of environmental pollution can be minimized.
