A one day legal awareness programme was held today at Lairikyengbam Leikai Community Hall under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority, Imphal East in association with All Manipur Nupi Marup, Imphal City District Council and Lairikyengbam Leikai Gram Panchayat.
The programme was sponsored by Manipur State Legal Services Authority.
CJM, Imphal East A Noutuneshwori graced the awareness programme as the chief guest while S Sanahanbi president of All Manipur Nupi Marup was the functional president.
Up-Adhyaksha, Imphal East ZP Sunder and Pradhan Lairikyengbam Leikai GP was the guest of honour.
Crime against women would be reduced if statuses of men and women are brought to an equitable level, said A Noutuneshwori.
She added that there are many instances where crimes against women were cooked up."Such actions sometimes project Manipuri women as very cheap in front of other communities", said Noutuneswhori.
Crime against women are more common among the weaker section as compared to the elite class of the society.
But in the eyes of the law every section of the society is the same, so it is high time for everyone to know the basic law and legal actions which anyone can take up, she added.
She expressed that criminal action against women in the State could be reduced if the various schemes and programmes provided by the State and Central Governments are implemented properly.
Such legal awareness programmes are a must for every section of the society regardless of gender, Noutuneshwori added.
P Sunder expressed his concern that people are not well aware of the various legal provisions provided by the Government and such awareness should shed light to the people.
He further said that the public involvement is very less in various decision making processes thereby providing undue opportunities to cheat the common people.
He urged the people to be aware of various plans and programmes taken up by the Government for the benefit of the public.
In the technical session of the programme SDPO, Porompat Imphal East, Ramgopal spoke on "the relationship of police and public".
He said that the police can only perform their duty properly when there is cooperation from the public though it would be tough to answer whether all the police personnel have all the qualities to be a policeman.
He added that it is high time for the police department to provide regular trainings and refresher courses for all the personnel.
Furthermore he urged the public to restrain from 'mob-justice' which is very much prevalent in the State.
President of All Manipur Nupi Marup, M Sakhi spoke on "the roles of women in the society" .
Sakhi said, "women are the backbone of a society, we women should understand this" .
She added that women in various places of Manipur are taking the law into their hands.
"Such actions would not have happened if we were legally aware.
Such awareness programme would surely help the women society", she added.
She said that the roles of women are great and women should not try to lower their roles by indulging in any kind of illegal activities and also urged the people to refrain from mob-justice.
