Imphal, March 14 2021:
Demanding disqualification of 12 MLAs who were appointed as Parliamentary Secretaries, a sit-in protest was staged at Samurou bazar today.
The sit-in was organised by Wangoi Block Congress Committee under the aegis of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee.
At the sit-in protest, MPCC co-opted member Salam Joy said the BJP Government is 'shielding' the 12 MLAs from disqualification since the last 4 years.
"The State's Act and the Repealing Act which made the 12 MLAs as Parliamentary Secretaries were struck down by the High Court as unconstitutional," he said.
After the HC order, the MPCC had approached the Governor to disqualify the 12 MLAs.
However they have not been disqualified yet, he added.
When MPCC approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), it informed that a letter had been sent to the Governor on the matter.
Even after this the Government is remaining silent, he said.
S Joy further stated that the protest launched by the Congress on the issue is not aimed at toppling the BJP-led Government to form a Congress Government, but to save democracy and uphold the Constitution.
The Congress party has decided to file a petition with the Supreme Court and meet the President of India on the issue, he added.
