Expressing deep concern over the continuing public agitation in Manipur demanding the immediate removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the State, National Council of Churches in India has appealed to the Central Govt to lift the AFSPA from the States of Manipur and Nagaland immediately.
Lauding the people of Manipur for showing restraint and not adopting a path of violence while carrying out the agitation, the council also expressed its solidarity to the people's movement and urged the people to end the ongoing agitation thorough dialogue and open discussion without adopting to violent tactics.
Meanwhile, All Manipur Christian Organization (AMCO) submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on September 6 appealing to the Union Minister to intervene and help stop army atrocities in the State.
