Imphal, June 12 2012:
The Kongba river bank from Bashikhong section upto Kongba Irong has been strengthened with additional layer of earth, which Irrigation and Flood Control Department (Flood Control Division) Assistant Engineer Liyakat said would prevent overflowing of the river water during the monsoon season.
Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of an inspection visit yesterday, Liyakat informed that the nearly 1 kilometre long stretch used to be one of the most vulnerable sections of the Kongba river.
According to Liyakat, the IFCD could not effectively implement river bank strengthening work as the Department is ill-equipped.
However, Thongju AC MLA Th Bishorjit provided heavy machinery, including 'soil compressor roller' with which the river bank repairing commenced, said the AE while informing that the repairing work is not a Government project but an endeavour of the MLA with technical assistance from the IFC Department to prevent colossal devastation from flooding.
