9th martyrs' memorial day

Nupi Khunai Meira Paibi observed its 9th martyrs' memorial day at YMDA Ground, Liwa, Maibam Leikai Bokul Makhong today.
Post the 1980s women movement, Meira Paibi groups were formed in almost all Meitei localities to protect the children and men from the Indian Security Forces, Nupi Khunai Meira Paibi Martyrs' Memorial Day Observation Committee secretary RK Bino stated.
On April 12, 1982, one meira paibi was killed and five other sustained injuries when a truck rammed into a group of meira paibis on vigil at Liwa Maibam Leikai.
The incident recorded the first death since the formation of Meira Paibis.
Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Lup, Manipur president Longjam Memchoubi who attended today's observance said the young generation should not overlook the roles and contributions of meira paibis in the Meitei community.
To strengthen the Meira paibis, Professor Ksh Bimola, Department of Political Science, Manipur University, urged the new generation women to join the group.
The Meira Paibis would not have emerged if not for the torments and abuse by the Indian Army on civilians.
Irabot Foundation, Manipur president Thounaojam Iboyaima, AMAWOVA president Yumkhaibam Kunjarani and Nupi Khunai Meira Paibi, Liwa Bokul Makhong president Wairokpam Mangol attended the function.
