Legal awareness program held

Imphal, October 09 2011:
The Imphal West District Legal Services Authority in association with the Human Rights Law Network (Manipur) organized a one-day Legal Literacy and Awareness Programme at Lairenkabi Maning Leikai under Imphal West District today.
During the Programme, Meihoubam Rakesh, Director, Human Rights Law Network (Manipur) spoke on the topic "Right to Food and Work" .
Wahengbam Joykumar, Deputy Ombudsman (NREGA), Imphal East shed light on "Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act" .
Thokchom Premlata Devi spoke on "Protection of Women from Domestic Violence" .
The programme also saw a lively interaction with the participants on various issues pertaining to failure of Targeted Public Distribution System and its remedial measures.
During the interaction with the participants, it transpired that there are several shortcomings and malpractices in the implementation of Targeted Public Distribution Systems and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005.There are instances of distribution of PDS at excessive prices and lesser quantity of rice, sugar and S K Oil.
A Guneshwar Sharma, Member Secretary, Manipur State Legal Services Authority, Manipur graced the programme as Chief Guest while Chingakham Pakpi, a Meira Paibi leader, presided over the programme and Yumkham Rother, Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West attended as Guest of Honour.
A Guneshwar Sharma, in his speech highlighted various services available under the Manipur State Legal Services Authority.
He also pointed out the important role played by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority.
