Claiming that they have looking after law and order in tribal villages located around Sugnu area under village chiefs, the Kuki Women Human Rights Association (KWHRA), Gunpi area has asked police, commandos and VDFs not to make 'unnecessary intervention' .
Speaking to media persons at the office of KSO Sugnu Block this afternoon, KWHRA spokesperson Nengkhao Tauthang said that they keeping strict vigil against any disturbance to law and order in tribal villages around Sugnu.
Police commandos entered Kholim village and Sugnu Tribal without permission of the village chiefs on August 6 .
The commandos called out Ngamlet Mate (22) and Jangminthang Khongsai (23) who were then having meal and thrashed them.
On the same day, commandos, pretending to be chasing some one, engaged themselves in rash driving in Najaret village only to create fear psychosis among the villagers, Nengkhao said.
On seeing the commandos, the villagers hid themselves inside their houses out of fear.
On the intervening night of August 7 and 8, police commandos beat up three Meitei boys at Sugnu tribal and took away Rs 1000 in cash.
One SP Khelthang of Upper Karong was also thrashed by four police personnel beneath the Serou Lamkhai VDF camp on August 6 .
Khelthang was held by three police personnel and the fourth personnel thrashed him.
Two of the police personnel opened several rounds of fire in the air.
Saying that there have been many instances of police, commandos and VDFs threatening and bullying villagers in the past too, the spokesperson said that police commandos engaged themselves in extra harassment of civilians in the form of frisking and checking since one day ahead if any Minister was visiting Sugnu.
Local Meira Paibis have been keeping a strict vigil at night under village chiefs in order to ensure that there is no disturbance to normal life of the villages.
Rather than ensuring security, intrusion of police, commandos and VDFs into the villages is only upsetting normal life of the people.
Asserting that the commandos and VDFs have failed to maintain law and order, the KWHRA spokesperson said that there is no need for deploying commandos and VDFs in Sugnu area.
She urged the authority concerned to remove commandos and VDFs from Sugnu area at the earliest.
