Ceiling collapses, none injured

Ceilings of a newly constructed building of staff quarters, Type-2, Block- 1 at Manipur University collapsed today causing damage to some household materials.
The incident happened around 2 pm today at room number- 4, Block- 1 which is occupied by Nganbam Sana, a lab attendant of Linguistic Department.
Ceilings of other rooms of the same block are in deplorable condition where leakage of water during rain is a common sight, said H Ngaihoihching, an occupant of room number- 8 of the building.
Chief Minister O Ibobi, while a attending a function at MU few months back, had cautioned the MU authority to maintain extra care in construction works within the campus.
An Engineer of MU, Sanasam Rajen said that the building was left vacant after its completion few years back.
He further added that the contractor concerned would be contacted very soon and repairing work would be started at the earliest after finding out the defect.
Even though there are recommendation for annual repair works, constraint in funds has hindered such processes, added Rajen.
Meanwhile, Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) general secretary, RK Pritam Kumar stated that careless attitude of the engineering department of MU is responsible for such incident.
He added that the conditions are almost the same in every staff quarters and even in all the hostels.
MUSU condemned the authority concerned for their carelessness and urged to start repairing works of all the buildings at the earliest.
