Imphal, November 06 2011:
Several civil society organisations have appealed to the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) to withdraw its decision of launching indefinite total blockade from November 10 .
They have also urged the State Government to come to an amicable solution with the JDDC.
In a press meet held at the office of NIPCO this afternoon where representatives of AMUCO, UPF, HERICOUN, IPSA , MAPI Council, CLK and NIPCO were also present, HERICOUN vice-president M Churamani noted that the economic blockade imposed by SHDDC and subsequent counter-blockade brought untold misery to the people.
Even as the State Government fixed prices of essential commodities in view of the soaring prices of all commodities, goods were sold at double the prices fixed by the Government.
The agitation spearheaded by the SHDDC which was highly undemocratic and violent was finally brought to an end after the MoU was signed with the Government.
On the other hand, the JDDC has been employing only the democratic modes of agitation in their pursuit to upgrade Jiribam to the status of a full fledged revenue district.
But the Government has been paying little attention to JDDC's struggle, Churamani noted.
Such irresponsible treatment of the issue by the State Government would turn out to be an indirect invitation to launch violent modes of agitation, he chipped in.
Saying that taking recourse to total blockade at a time when there is already another highway blockade in force would only compound the woes of the general public, Churamani appealed to the JDDC to review their decision of launching total blockade from November 10 .
He also urged the Government to strike an agreement with the JDDC before November 10 .
AMUCO organisation secretary Deban pointed out that the Government never felt the impacts of economic blockades.
It is the common people, and more particularly the wage earners, who are the worst affected by blockades.
If the Government is a popular Government, it should understand the plight and suffering of the mass, Deban added.
