Imphal, August 06 2009:
Out of six persons apprehended by police including four functionaries of the Apunba Lup, five persons have been remanded to police custody for five days.
The six persons were apprehended by Imphal West police from different places yesterday after the 48 hours general strike called by the Apunba Lup against the police firing of July 23 at Khwairamband Market in which two persons including a pregnant woman lost their lives besides causing injuries to five other people.
Out of them, Ph Devan, Dayananda Chingtham, Th Naobi and L Nganbi have been accused of inciting public unrest besides being members of the AMUCO.
An FIR has been registered against them at Singjamei police station.
On similar charges, another FIR has been registered against Sunil Karam at Imphal police station.
However, no case was registered against Nganbi's husband Kumar who was among the apprehended persons.
According to information received by press, Devan, Dayananda, Naobi and Sunil are activists of the Apunba Lup while Nganbi is secretary of the Kwakeithel Apunba Meira Paibi Lup.
All five of them (excluding Kumar) were produced before Additional CJM Imphal today.
Even as the prosecutor pleaded for 10 days police custody, the Court granted only five days' remand.
Former co-ordinator of the Apunba Lup Devan of Singjamei Waikhom Leikai, assistant co-ordinator Th Naobi of Singjamei Thongam Leikai and member Dayananda Chingtham were apprehended from the Haobam Marak Irom Leirak residence of Nganbi.
They have been charged under IPC section 188/121/121-A/147/148/149/427/34, 7 Criminal Act and 18/39 UA(P) Act.
Sunil Karam of Ithai but staying at Keishamthong Top Leirak is also charged with IPC Section 124-A/435/34, 7 Criminal Act and 39 UA (P) Act.
He is also a co-ordinator of the Apunba Lup.
Imprison commandos: AMYPCO: Asserting that the Khwairamband Market firing incident of July 23 was a fake encounter and that Sanjit and Rabina were killed in fake encounters, the All Manipur Youth Protection Committee (AMYPCO) suspension of guilty commandos would not suffice.
They should be booked and imprisoned.
Speaking to media persons at Lamsang this afternoon, AMYPCO president in-charge Boby Sairemcha demanded that the commandos involved in killing Sanjit and Rabina in the fake encounter should be booked and imprisoned instead of mere suspension.
He also demanded suspension of Chief Minister O Ibobi on moral ground.
Saying that AMYPCO salute all those injured by rubber bullets and tear gas shells in police action against the spontaneous mass movement, Boby decried such excessive action of the Government and security forces.
Asserting that imposition of curfew and arrest of Apunba Lup functionaries cannot subdue the mass movement, Boby said that AMYPCO would be continuing with the ongoing movement together with JACs until the people's demands are fulfilled.
The people's movement is justified, he asserted.
He further declared that AMYPCO would carry on the movement together with civil organisations of both the hills and valley.
