Tree plantation drives continue in observance of Van Mahotsav

As part of Van Mahotsav which is observed annually across the country in the first week of July, Tree Planters Organisation for Save Environment, Heirok organised a plantation drive at Heirok, today.
During the drive, saplings were planted at the office complex of Heirok Police Station which is situated at Heirok Part (ii) Mayai Leikai.
At the event, OC of the Police Station, Inspector Premjit lauded the organiser for the initiative to save the environment at their capacity.
Secretary of the organisation, N Bijen Meitei said that the sole objective of the Tree Planters Organisation for Save Environment is to make Heirok a greener place.
He also said that Education Minister Dr Thokchom Radheshyam, Member of Heirok Zilla Parishad, T Nungshi Singh and Pradhans of Heirok Part I, II and III assisted to ensure the plantation to be effective.
Most of the saplings planted today are of fruit-bearing trees and trees which have medicinal properties, he added.
On the other hand, the District Forest Division, Chandel also celebrated the Van Mahotsav 2020 at Lamphoupasna, Chandel district on Saturday.
DC Chandel, Krishna Kumar; DFO Chandel, N Ganesh; SP Chandel, N Modhunimai; SDO Chandel; ZEO; officials of 18 AR, Medical department; District Aids Control Officer and others attended the event as dignitaries who also planted many tree saplings.
DLOs, villagers and representatives of different civil society organisations also attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Chandel Deputy Commissioner, Krishna Kumar said that the plantation drive initiated by the Forest Department was a very commendable work.
Voluntary organisations, village-level organisations are equally responsible as they should come up with certain ways to protect the sapling planted today, he said.
He added that similar drives will be implemented in other villages of the district if this year's drive comes out to be a successful one.
He further said that district administration is looking for a valuable partnership as such a programme cannot be successful without active participation and contributions from the public.
While addressing the gathering the DFO Chandel, N Ganesh, IFS, thanked the villagers and the civil society organisations for their active participation.
Expressing concern of rampant deforestation at places, he suggested that the afforestation will be more effective if the responsibility of forest protection is further decentralised to the village level.
Celebrating "Van Mahotsav", different clubs and organisations of Thoubal under the aegis of DFO Thoubal planted saplings, today.
In the plantation drive attended by EE Th Komol of PWD Kakching, Social Development Athletic Union (SDAU), Tekcham planted around 100 saplings at the surrounding areas of Tekcham High School Ground.
Rural Progressive Union (RPU), Papal Maning Leikai planted trees beside Papal to Tekcham road stretch while Khongjom Standard English School, Khongjom planted saplings at school campus.
On the other hand, youth of Salungpham Maning Leikai under the theme "Save Environment", planted around 100 saplings in their locality.
