Pig rearing management training programme starts

Ukhrul, March 05 2020:
A seven-day skill training programme for rural youth on scientific pig rearing & management began today at the training hall of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ukhrul.
The programme organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ukhrul and sponsored by National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Hyderabad will continue till March 11.Joint Director ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre, Dr N Prakash, who attended the programme as chief guest, motivated the youth to rear pig in a commercial scale by forming a group to enable enterprise development in piggery.
He also stated the doubling of farmer's income will not be achieved until allied activities like piggery, poultry, beekeeping, fishery etc are not taken along with the crop production.
Maize constitutes 60 per cent of the feed, production of maize need to be increased so as to increase the profitability, he said and reiterated that farmers should focus to convert the vat diversity of Manipur into an enterprise.
Dr Pankaj Sararwat, Head KVK Tamenglong who was the guest of honour for the programme, stated that piggery development is very important for doubling farmer income.
Self Help Group (SHG) and Farmers Producing Organization (FPO) should be involved in the piggery development of the Ukhrul, he added.
Dr L Loken Singh, Course in-charge of the training, stated that the course comprised of breed management, feed management, housing, disease and parasite management in a pig.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Y Ramakrishna, Head KVK Ukhrul stated that protein demand of Ukhrul is fulfilled by supply of pig from Imphal and neighbouring country i.e Myanmar, so there is scope for development of piggery based enterprise at Ukhrul.
