Imphal, December 04 2012:
A one-day consultation workshop on 'Alarming Gender Violence in Manipur' has been organised by Universal Mothers' Organisation, iroisemba at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound today.
Expressing grave concern on the increasing cases of outraging modesty of women and minor girls in Manipur, Just Peace Foundation's managing trustee Kh Anandi Devi proposed that the perpetrators be subjected to severest form of punishment as a means to curb violence against women and children.
Noting that till date there had been no report of punishing the rapists, she opined that such leniency amounts to encouraging crime against women and children.
According to UCM president Yumnam Nabachandra Meetei, impact of continuous imposition of the draconian AFSPA is also been felt by the womenfolk as they often become the target of criminal-minded security force personnel.
He suggested that there is still need for concerted effort from all sections of the society to ensure safety of the fairer sex.
Nabachandra also opined that misuse of modern inventions such as mobile phones and internet as well as indulgence in wasteful activities by the upcoming generation are some contributory factors for the increase in crime against women and children.
The UCM president further conveyed resentment that inspite of formation of JACs and protest demonstrations against rape or violence against women most of the culprits manage to escape punishment.
Speaking at the occasion, UMO president Ningthoujam Sorojini Chanu urged all out effort and contribution from the common people in general and NGOs in particular to check incidents of rape and molestation.
In case timely action is not initiated Manipur will continue to suffer seriously.
