He made good his escape by making a big hole in the wall of his lock up cell and most likely scaled the six feet high compound wall of the Porompat Police station.
In connection with the incident, seven personnel of Porompat Police including the OC, two SI and one ASI were suspended for dereliction of duty.
DGP, Y Joykumer has given direction for a departmental enquiry over these suspended personnel.
The suspended police personnel are Inspector Konjengbam Gitchandra from Moirang, SI T Tomtom from Khurai, SI Waiphei from New Chekkon, ASI Md Zabir from Yairipok, Constable Md Shakeel from Kshetrigao, Constable Raghumani from Lamlai and Constable Md Farooq from Yairipok.
According to police source, Chirom Tiken alias Leninkumar alias Premkumar alias Prakash alias Sunil Meetei, the 35 years old 'commander-in-chief' of the KCP faction was brought back to Imphal by a team of Bishnupur district police led by SDPO S Hopson from New Delhi after obtaining transit remand from a local court there on July 21 .
On the fateful night, Sunil was kept in the lock up cell of Porompat police along with four other inmates who were arrested by the police on separate charges.
Sentries stationed in the police station found him missing from his cell when they checked the cell after hearing some noises at around 2.30 am today.
They also found a big hole on the outer wall of the cell.
The four other inmates on questioning told them that Sunil Meetei had escaped sometimes ago.
An iron rod and a GI pipe were also found lying inside the cell with which Sunil might have made the hole and escaped from the cell.
Police are assuming that he might have begun making the hole some days ago.
However police posted there, failed to detect this since he kept the area covered with his blanket all the time.
Further investigation hinted at poor quality control during the construction of the cell.
The cells were made by repairing an old building of the police station.
There was once a door at the area where the hole was made.
After coming out of the hole he made through the wall, Sunil must have escaped from the police station by scaling the six feet high fence wall, police said.
Commandos spread out all over the district and adjoining districts to nab the escaped KCP chief but till the filing of this report there has been no news of success on this front.
State DGP came to the police station and personally checked the hole and the strategy adopted by the KCP chief for his escape from the cell.
He made the suspension order of the police personnel after returning from the police station.
The four inmates who were spending the night with Sunil Meetei have been booked under a new FIR above the their previous charges.
Out of them Md Kadir from Urup is a cadre of the proscribed UG group PULF.
Others include SDC Deven from Chekkon who was arrested for forging signature of DC, sweeper, JNIMS, Md Amin from Golapati who was arrested for stealing computer set and S Ibocha from Kongpal who is a cadre of KCP.
It may be mentioned that Sunil Meitei is an accused in many criminal activities related to extortion and murder in various parts of Bishnupur, Imphal West and Imphal East districts and drug trafficking.
Porompat police took him custody from Bishnupur police for an investigation to the cases involving him, registered with the police station last week.
