Assistance given to handloom clusters

Margin money, looms, weaving accessories and equipment were distributed to members of 12 handloom clusters of Imphal West district at a simple function hosted by the District Handlooms & Textiles, Imphal West at GM Hall today.
As chief guest of the function, Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam said the weaving materials/accessories distributed today to the 12 handloom clusters is a part of the Central Government's special programme to promote the textile industry.
Urging the weavers' societies to sustain their profession as the State Government too is working on a specific policy to extend all possible assistance to the weavers, he affirmed that hard-working and committed artisans would never be undermined or ignored by the Government.
Informing that the Central Government is focused on the development of handloom industry in the North east region for which substantial financial assistance is being released periodically, Govindas noted that with Manipur having the largest number of female handloom workers among the NE States there is huge potential for growth of the industry.

The Minister also advised the handloom workers for purposeful utilisation of financial and material assistance provided by the Government and to repay loan regularly.
In his brief address, Principal Secretary for Commerce & Industries and Sericulture O Nabakishore exhorted the weavers to strive for enhancing the product along with strict conformity to standard quality.
Lamshang AC MLA W Brajabidhu Singh, Imphal West District Handlooms and Textiles Project Manager M rajen Singh and Commerce & Industries Deputy Director Lamlee Kamei were also present at the occasion.
A special awareness cum registration camp of Imphal West was also organised along with the items distribution programme.
A total amount of Rs 35,45,400 were handed out to 622 weavers of the 12 handloom clusters along with distribution of 143 looms amounting to Rs 14,94,350 and 1909 accessories worth Rs 36,29,350 .
