Bishnupur, August 03 2022:
Following an order issued by the State Government on July 18, dismantling of illegal structures, floating homestays, floating huts and "athaphums" began today at Loktak Lake.
The drive to remove/dismantle illegal structures and athaphums (circular fish culture ponds) was participated by Loktak Development Authority (LDA) Chairman, Moirangthem Asnikumar; LDA Project Director, Longjam Bhagaton and other officials.
About 300 fishermen from Ningthoukhong, Toupokpi and nearby areas also took part in the drive.
Speaking to media persons, M Asnikumar informed that the State Government under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren Singh has initiated many schemes and projects to save and rejuvenate the ecology of Loktak lake.
He mentioned that the drive to remove illegal structures and athaphums was carried out under the supervision of the CM for the welfare of the people and fishing community.
Stating that the growing number of illegal structures, floating huts and homestays constructed on phumdis have put the lake at risk, the LDA Chairman urged all to remove such structures at the earliest.
M Asnikumar further appealed to the public to refrain from throwing plastic items in the lake and fishing using electric current & poison.
As part of the drive, LDA also distributed 1000 "Yempak" to the participants.
