Flood menace Irate locals turn back Chief Secretary's convoy

Irate locals of Samushang, Lamboi Khongnangkhong turned back a convoy led by Chief Secretary when they went to visit that area to take stock of the prevailing flood situation.
The incident happened at Samushang when the team comprising of the Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga, Additional Chief Secy WL Hangsing, Chief Engineer (IFCD) Robindro Sharma, Additional Chief Engineer (IFCD) Dhanabir and other officials visited the flood affected areas in Imphal West district today.
The team earlier visited Lamphel area which is submerged.
Incessant rainfall also led to the overflowing of Nambul River and water has seeped into houses at Sagolband, Uripok, Wahengbam Leikai, Nagamapal, Cheirap Court Complex, Uripok Auto Parking and Keishampat areas.
Flood water have inundated the entrance points of the Manipur Zoological Garden, However, the animal enclosures are safe, a report said.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga stated that incessant rainfall has caused such flash floods in different areas of the State.
He added that financial assistance from Disaster Relief Funds has been dispatched to all different flood affected districts.
For immediate relief, Rs 15 lakh has been given to all the DCs and additional amount will be distributed as per demand.
He further said that the Chief Minister has instructed all the concerned departments to provide all the relief materials to flood affected areas at the earliest under the Disaster Management.
Various preventive materials and other necessary commodities like drinking water, medicine, food materials will also be provided in the relief camps, he added.
Executive member of United Friends' Library Club Lamboi Khongnangkhong Ch Bushanta expressed displeasure over the State Government's failure to take precautionary measures before the flood happened.
The locals also said that it is the responsibility of the Government to take precautionary measures and ensure safety of the flood affected people.
Incessant rainfall over the past few days have increased water levels of all major drainage systems of Imphal city.
Hotel Imphal and office complex of Manipur Public Service Commission was also flooded.
Farmland in Leitha Loukol, Kwakta-Saiton, Saiton Awang Leikai, Kwakta Charangpat and Saiton Mamang Sagolpat have been reportedly submerged.
Meanwhile, water level of Iril river , Nambul river and Nambol river is said to be stabilised, according to sources.
It is also reported that in Yaiskul and Bheigyabati Leikai there was water leakage from Imphal river, added the report.
Earlier, Mahabali forest was submerged by overflowing water of Imphal river.
All district level offices of Imphal East district are informed to attend an emergency meeting at 12:30 pm on August 2 at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner Imphal East Porompat for discussion on preparedness to meet any eventualities which may arise out of the situation.
