Imphal, February 29 2020:
Chief Minister N Biren Singh was left fuming today after he saw that the plants/trees which have been growing on the road median from Koirengei to Khabam Chumbreithong for more than 15 years were all withering and dying due to negligence and lack of proper maintenance during the black-topping of National Highway 2 and construction of road medians.
The said trees were planted way back in 2004, under the Green Imphal campaign, when Chief Minister N Biren was Forest and Environment Minister (independent charge) .

The trees were planted to mitigate the impacts of climate change as well as to help cope with the pollution caused by the ever increasing number of vehicles in the State, to an extent.
However, during recent black-topping of the National Highway and renovation of the road median by a private firm, M/S Shivalaya Construction Pvt Ltd, many of the trees were uprooted.
Moreover, many of the trees from Koirengei to Chumbreithong withered and died as the earth around them was removed for the purpose of development works.
The Chief Minister was returning from a personal errand when he decided to stop and inspect the construction works.
However, upon seeing the irresponsible antics of the firm which led to the death of the trees, the Chief Minister was left fuming.
He also showed his annoyance to the top officials of Highway Division, Works Department, who were accompanying him on the trip.
On the other hand, the Chief Minister also expressed his displeasure at the extended period of time taken to complete the road construction works from Khongnang Ani Karak to Koirengei.
Pointing out that the inordinately slow pace of work has caused immense grievances to the general public, Biren directed the officials concerned to expedite the construction works at the earliest.
