Imphal, May 27 2013:
The 49th death anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru was observed today at Congress Bhavan here as done elsewhere in different parts of the country.
The main feature of the death anniversary observance was offering of floral tributes to photograph of Jawaharlal Nehru led by MPCC president Gaikhangam.
Speaking to media persons in connection with Nehru's death anniversary, Gaikhangam claimed that was not only a freedom fighter but also an architect of modern India.
Nehru was a great philosopher who was instrumental in setting up the Non-Aligned Movement with a view to bring last peace on earth.
As envisioned by Nehru, it is of paramount importance for all citizens to work collectively towards a new Manipur free from conflicts and violence, Gaikhangam asserted.
The Government of India has approved a proposal to open a self contained centre in Manipur which would be equipped with vocational training centres for enabling misguided people who have returned to the mainstream earn their livelihood.
Stating that the Government is searching for 200 acres of land for opening the Centre, Gaikhangam sought public cooperation towards this end.
Talking about the alarming spurt in smuggling drugs through Myanmar and the recent seizure of huge consignment of drugs, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that the Law Department has been examining minutely to come up with a flawless law which would enable the authority to forfeit properties of drug smugglers.
If such a law can be enacted within a short time and drug smugglers punished according to law, the menace of drug smuggling can be mitigated considerably, Gaikhangam added.
