Imphal, May 24 2013 :
Expressing discontentment over the conduct of perfunctory three-day health mela at Joupi village in Khengjoy subdivision from May 17-19 by the NRHM Chandel, the Kuki Students' Organisation played down the health mela saying it was done only as a cosmetic exercise to score some brownie points and impressed higher ups.
Though the health mela was meant for villages falling under Khengjoy subdivision which has around 135 villages, only a handful villages around Joupi village were aware of the tentative programme whereas most of the villages were kept in the dark, a statement issued by Khengjoy Block KSO president, T Thangjalun Haokip pointed out.
Attributing the low turn out at the health camp to NRHM authority's failure to give prior information to the surrounding villages, the KSO said the turn out could have increased manifold had civil societies or chiefs were intimated.
However, an exaggerated figure, let out in the State media, was ridiculous and contrary to the fact.
It was due to the assiduous effort of the 32AR who took up the onus of providing transportation facilities to the patients of the surrounding villages that the turn out bore the semblance of the health mela, it said adding the KSO team had accommodated the media and medical staff who were left behind at Tengnoupal due to poor arrangement in transportation.
The medical kits brought by the team was simply insufficient to meet the requirements and the medicines brought could not even meet the needs of ten villages, it stated.
